This record is dedicated to Bobby Liebling and Roky Erickson and rightfully so, if someone told me that they had unearthed an old rare 7" that was a collaboration between the two guys, I would probably believe it...it's that close.
Well for most of you the Pentagram reference will suit just fine. If you guys liked that Relapse record release 'First Daze' with all the early recordings of Bobby and Co., then chances are you will totally love this 7 inch, especially the 'A' side, No Angel or Demon.
'No Angel or Demon' has the same kind of feel at times to Pentagram's 'Last Days Here' vocally and musically...or 'When the Screams Come'...the drums are precise and slippery just like the early Pentagram material for sure, and the leads are bluesy, soulful and classic...and the vocals have an uncanny resemblance to one Bobby Liebling...take that and tinge it with a little early Roky and you are there.
Now 'You Bury Your Head' reminds me a bit more of Sabbath from the get go, and this song is one pure classic evil sounding doom masterpiece. Starts out like Spiral Architect and has sort of a Masters of Reality feel to it through and through, great evil chord progression and little half step evil flutters that Iommi is famous for...those little evil burst leads that sound like a guitar trill. This songs breaks into a part that reminds me again of Roky Erickson, most notably the song 'Night of the Vampire' with it's thick open acoustic styled chords...but soon is back to the Sabbath/Pentagram stomp (he even mentions the word 'pentagram' in it!). Once again the leads are top notch classic clean slightly overdriven warm tubed over goodness.
This 7 inch rules, it's nothing new but for what it is, it's pretty damn fucking good.
